Landgoed Wichersoord
- t16 persons
Country house Wichersoord is a beautiful property, located on the beautiful Wichersoord estate. The house has 8 double bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, each floor with its own kitchen and living room. You can relax in the grounds or by the swimming pool.
Landgoed Wichersoord is the first newly developed estate on Walcheren since a century and a half. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the countryside of Walcheren formed the backdrop to more than 270 estates and country estates, and the northwest coast of Walcheren was also known as the gold coast. There are currently only 12 left.
Landgoed Wichersoord, with an area of 6.2 hectares, is part of the traditionally Zeeland-style walking area Buiten Pekelynge, which is registered under the Natural Beauty Act, with more than 18 hectares forest around a beautiful water feature rich in fish and birds. It is decorated in an English landscape style with sloping lines and meandering walkways. Due to its location, the estate is connected to the Manteling, the beautiful forest and dune area between Domburg and Oostkapelle, with cycling and hiking trails.
From the 17th century, partly due to various trade companies in Middelburg and Vlissingen, prosperity on Walcheren increased sharply. Wealth arose through the income from foreign trade and the flourishing of the associated crafts. The shipyards of the companies also provided a lot of work. The well-to-do bourgeoisie (nobility and wealthy merchants) set up country estates for themselves, surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens. As a result, Walcheren was known for centuries as the Garden of Zeeland, an idyllic island with small-scale allotment, leafy roads, pollard willows, green hedges and vistas. It was definitively lost when the Allies bombed the dikes in 1944-1945 and the sea flooded the island for a year in order to drive out the occupiers.
The estate is not far from the wide beaches of Oostkapelle and Domburg, awarded with the international Blue Flag. In the vicinity are several riding schools, the Domburgsche Golf Club and the atmospheric village center of Domburg. According to insiders, Domburg is the oldest seaside resort in the Netherlands; in earlier times, artists such as Jan Toorop and Piet Mondrian settled there to immortalize the Zeeland skies. Even today, Domburg has lost nothing of its old grandeur!
Het Veerse Meer is also in the immediate vicinity, an attractive water sports area for sailors, surfers, anglers and divers, with the romantic harbor town of Veere as its centre.
A main building consisting of three residential units, a management house and an outbuilding has now been erected on the estate, entirely in line with provincial guidelines: a 21st century country house with all the associated comfort, but with a nod to the 19th century. The towers are typical of the country houses of the Zeeland patricians. These towers probably served to look out over the island and the sea and they referred to Italian architecture. Wichersoord therefore also has a tower, with the possibility on the 2nd floor to view the wide area from the balcony to the water tower of Domburg. A beautifully integrated and comfortably heated natural swimming pool in the water feature could not be missed on this estate.
Both the site and the buildings of Wichersoord are housed in a foundation/BV. The primary objective of this foundation is to protect and maintain this unique nature reserve over a long period of time. It strives for this by preserving forest, water and garden in their natural state as much as possible. This also applies to the main house and the outbuildings. However, the board of the foundation is aware that the sustainable maintenance of the estate, given its limited resources and size, is only possible through recreational rental of the main building and annex. The opening of the walking area to the public also contributes to financial sustainability through the Natural Beauty Act. Finally, to make the estate energy-neutral and sustainable, a small part of the site has been sacrificed to solar panels without loss of natural values.
